According to skin-care experts, people should not use the hands off approach to get rid of most bumps and blemishes.
Dendy Engelman, M.D., board-certified dermatologist at Manhattan Dermatology and Cosmetic Surgery in New York City says: “Popping anything causes your skin to physically break apart, making it more susceptible to infection and an even bigger problem than what was originally there in the first place.”
Types of Bumps and Blemishes You Should Never Try to Pop
Cold sores
Never try to get rid of them with your hands because these blisters are caused by the herpes simple virus which can be transmitted from one area of the body to another, through touching.
What to do: If you notice cold sores that are more frequent and spreading, consult your doctor.
Ingrown Hairs
When the hair shaft becomes trapped beneath the skin’s surface, ingrown hair appears. Never use tweezers or manual force to pluck them because it can lead to inflammation and infection or even to more dangerous complications like sepsis or staph infection.
What to do: Apply hydrocortisone, which reduces redness and irritation, and wash the affected area with an exfoliating cleanser.
Blackheads
Don’t try to sqeeze them because it forces the bacteria even deeper and causes trauma to the skin.

Milia
Those hard, white cysts under the skin are called Milia. Don’t try to pop them because it will leave your skin red, irritated and inflamed, with the milia still intact.
What to do: Visit your dermatologist who will extract it with a heated sterilized tool.
Whiteheads
Whiteheads keep acne bacteria contained to one area while the blemish heals. When it is squeezed, it releases the contents of the blemish- often a mix of skin cells, oil and acne bacteria.
What to do: Allow the acne to clear on its own.
