Minimizing Arthritis Inflammation through Nutrition

Arthritis is a common and often chronic disease that is most often treated with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Many arthritis sufferers would prefer to steer away from prescription drug treatment, particularly when the symptoms are not severe, or would like to find alternative treatments to use in conjunction with NSAIDs.

There are two main types of arthritis:

  • Osteoarthritis (OA) is caused by the breakdown and eventual loss of the cartilage of joints. Cartilage is a protein substance that serves as a cushion between the bones of the joints. OA is also known as degenerative arthritis and is the most common type of arthritis that causes joint pain and swelling. OA most commonly affects the hands, feet, spine and large weight-bearing joints, such as the hips and knees.
  • Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an inflammatory disease that affects the entire system of the body. RA causes pain, stiffness, swelling and loss of motion in the joints. It is an autoimmune disease in which a person's immune system attacks his or her own body tissues for unknown reasons. In RA, the immune system attacks the tissue that lines the joints, called the synovium, causing inflammation and tissue overgrowth.
For those who suffer from OA, the inclusion of Flavocoxid (Limbrel) in the diet can be beneficial.. Limbrel is a concentrated blend of plant-based flavonoids that are found in foods like soy, cauliflower, kale, peanuts, and green tea. Flavonoids are chemicals that give plants their color, and may have health benefits when consumed.
The amount of necessary flavonoids for effectiveness cannot be consumed by a regular diet of these foods. Limbrel is classified as a medical food and is only available by prescription. The flavonoids in Limbrel inhibit both COX and 5-LOX enzymes, which are both implicated in the pain and inflammation of osteoarthritis. The enzymes are blocked without the side effects of NSAIDS. The most common side effect is stomach upset.
Fiber is now believed to have the ability of lowering C-reactive protein (CRP), an indicator of inflammation found in the blood. Fiber is already known to be good for the heart and encourages the prevention of some types of cancer. Having a high CRP level indicates general inflammation and could point to infection, rheumatoid arthritis (RA) or even heart disease.
Lowering CRP by eating more fruits, vegetables and other high-fiber foods could help arthritis by promoting the reduction of inflammation. Although more research is necessary before making any claims that increased fiber intake can truly benefit arthritis patients, it is an excellent step for maintaining overall health.
The benefits of omega-3 fatty acids were recently discovered during a study at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston revealing that omega-3s actually convert into compounds that are 10,000 times more potent than the original fatty acids themselves. The new compounds include resolvins, which help bring the inflammatory response to an end.
In a healthy immune system, the normal inflammatory process repairs any damage as well as protects the body from infections. But in arthritis and inflammatory diseases, an overactive immune response leads to tissue degradation. The research found that the process by which inflammation starts could be halted with the body's conversion of omega-3s into resolvins. The American Dietetic Association recommends food over supplements as the preferred source of omega-3s. The best source is fish.
The United States Department of Agriculture recommends two servings a week (3.5-ounce portions) of the following fish for healthy omega-3 fatty acids benefits, which can help reduce inflammation:
  • Atlantic salmon
  • Sockeye salmon
  • Lake trout
  • Tuna canned in oil or water
Research has also now shown that cooking certain foods, such as meats, at high temperatures by frying or grilling produces compounds in certain foods that can increase inflammation in the body. The compounds are called advanced glycation end products (AGEs) and are found in the blood of people with chronic diseases associated with inflammation, including RA and OA.
AGEs detected in blood were thought to be from the body's natural supply of AGEs, but scientists have found that foods cooked at high temps create AGEs that can be absorbed by the body. About 10 percent of the AGEs that come from eating seared burgers and fried chicken may be absorbed. Although it is believed that increased levels of AGEs increase inflammation, a direct link to arthritis is not yet firmly established. However, it would be a health wise decision to limit these types of food in your diet.
To achieve a lower AGE diet, limit the amount of grilled, broiled, fried and microwaved meats in your diet. In addition, reduce the cooking temperature of meats and proteins. Steam fish and seafood, simmer chicken in a sauce and braise red meat in a cooking liquid. Cut down on processed foods and eat more fruits and vegetables.
Extra-virgin olive oils have also been found to be of benefit in reducing inflammation. Studies revealed that a compound in the oil, called oleocanthal, prevents the production of pro-inflammatory COX-1 and COX-2 enzymes the same way NSAIDs work. Stronger-flavored oils from Tuscany or other regions that use the same olive varietal have the highest oleocanthal levels. Researchers say that about 3 1/2 Tbsp. of the oil is equal to a 200-mg tablet of ibuprofen. Since this amount of oil has more than 400 calories, to avoid excess calories, use extra-virgin olive oil instead of other fats, such as butter.
A type of fat found in milk inhibits substances produced by the body that play a significant role in inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA), according to a recent study. Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), is an essential fatty acid found in the milk. It blocks the pathway of COX-1 and COX-2 enzymes, which trigger inflammation that can ultimately damage joints. Consuming several servings of dairy products daily may be enough to benefit from CLA. More studies still need to be done to investigate the specific amounts needed to derive the most benefit.
It has long been known that nutrition plays an important role in maintaining overall good health. But, following a healthier diet may also promote healing without medication.

Clinton and Kaine tour Rust Belt battlegrounds as shadow of Trump looms

Protesters stood in the rain, waiting to greet the daughter of a drapery salesman and the son of an iron welder as they rolled into western Pennsylvania and Ohio.
Coal Country, a region where Donald Trump expects to win over blue-collar workers and cultural conservatives, isn’t friendly territory for Democrats. That was precisely why Hillary Clinton and Tim Kaine had come.
“Lock her up!” a few dozen protesters jeered as they stepped off the bus into a rainy haze on their fourth stop of their post-convention tour, at Johnstown Wire Technologies factory in Cambria county, which is 93% white and has a median household income of $42,000. Some waved Trump 2016 signs and American flags. Others held homemade posters with phrases like: “Send her a$$ to jail!” Across the road a smaller group huddled. Their signs read: “Steelworkers for Clinton.”
With 100 days to go to the presidential election, Clinton and Kaine have made clear they are going to fight for working-class voters. On their first campaign trip together, the two Ivy League-educated political insiders drew on their modest midwestern upbringings in an effort to connect with voters now frustrated with their lot. There, Clinton recalled in detail how she would spend hours in her father’s dimly lit printing plant, dragging a squeegee across the silk screen laid on top of the drapery fabric. In the factory, Kaine said he recognized some of the machinery from the days spent in his father’s iron-working shop.
“We are visiting places that prove what Americans can do,” Clinton told 200 or so mostly unionized workers during her remarks at the factory. “We have the most productive, competitive workers in the world, we just need to give our people the chance to succeed. So from Philadelphia to Hatfield to Harrisburg and now here in Johnstown, that’s exactly what we’re doing.”
For decades, Democrats have lost out to Republicans among blue-collar workers and white Americans with a low education. Trump has capitalized on this trend and is counting on making a battleground state out of Pennsylvania, which has not voted for a Republican for president since 1988. The state is central to Trump’s Rust Belt strategy, along with success in the Great Lakes states such as Ohio, Michigan and WisconsinPolls show a tight race there. In a head-to-head race, Clinton leads Trump in Pennsylvania by 46% to 42%, according to the realclearpolitics.com average. In Ohio, she leads by less than 1%, 42.6% to 41.8%.
Under gauzy marquee lighting at a market in Harrisburg, Clinton appealed for help convincing ambivalent voters that the stakes are now too high to sit out.
“If somebody is not interested in voting,” she said, “if somebody has given up on politics, if somebody says it won’t make any difference, ask them to give us a chance.”
Through the weekend, the Clinton-Kaine motorcade wound through faded factory towns in hilly green landscapes.
“If you’re looking for a kind of pessimistic, downbeat vision of America, we’re not your folks,” Clinton said at toy manufacturing factory in Hatfield, Pennsylvania, on Friday. “We do not buy into that dark, divisive image that was presented at the Republican convention last week.”
In her first 100 days in office, Clinton said, she would push through a gridlocked Congress the biggest jobs agenda since the second world war, a plan to create more jobs by investing in new infrastructure and clean energy.
“We’re going to create jobs in Pennsylvania and across America,” she said in Johnstown. “Especially in places that have been left out and left behind.

Kerosene hits all time high price: Nigerians groan

Dual Purpose Kerosene (DPK), a product which over 30 million Nigerians depend on daily for their cooking and other domestic use has been put beyond reach of the masses due to the sudden hike and scarcity of the product across Nigeria. In the last few weeks, the product hit all time high price of N700 per litre, adding to the pain of many households that depend on the product for cooking.
The scarcity of the product, brought about selling between N200 and N700 per litre nationwide, many have resorted into using charcoal, sawdust, firewood to cook their food as they can’t afford to buy a litre of petrol at such outrageous amount. Meanwhile, The Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), known as cooking gas, also remained high selling at N320 per kilogramme in the last few days.
ENCOMIUM Weekly sought the opinion of the public on how they have been coping with the hike in the price of the product. In the chat, many revealed their ordeal and urged the FG to provide a possible solution.

RACHAEL OLOJEDE – People are really suffering in this country, we are going through a hell of a hard time, many have lost their jobs, many are about to lose their jobs. Even those who are still working, can’t survive again on the little salary they are earning. Our leaders don’t know our pain, they don’t buy kerosene, they don’t take public transport, they don’t buy cups of garri from the market woman, they don’t live on low budget to survive. Many are earning N10,000, N20,000, N30,000 every month.
So, they will never understand what the common man is passing through. I have stopped using kerosene, and I don’t use cooking gas too because I can’t afford a gas cylinder. I cook with firewood and broken plastic these days. It’s not convenient for me but I don’t have option. It’s the situation at hand.

OMOLARA AKINNUSI – The situation is not funny. I have learn to manage kerosene just because of the sudden rise in the price. I use to buy a litre of kerosene for N80, I’m surprised that the same litre is now sold for N300. The situation is saddening because we don’t know where this might lead to.

OLAYEMI ADEBO – It has been difficult to cook for me due to the price of kerosene in Nigeria today, a bottle is sold for N200 while litre is N350 as at yesterday when I bought kerosene. Many have ventured into using all soughs of things to cook, even charcoal is expensive, nothing is cheap in the country today. Our government should help the less privileged Nigerians.

JAIYEOBA VICTOR – In Kwara state where I school, the product is sold for N215 per litre while a bottle goes for N200. We can’t afford that price for a bottle of kerosene. We have learned to use charcoal and other funny means of getting our food prepared.
Our government needs to review the economic system of the country. It should be made a strictly capitalist state where everyone will be allowed to contribute their quota in helping themselves and increasing the standard of life in the country. The masses are suffering, they are voiceless.

MRS. EZINNE NNAJI – The present administration is not helping matters, the product(kerosene) is expensive, yet its fake. It burns faster than what you can ever think of. How can I buy a litre of kerosene for about N400 and won’t last me to prepare a pot of soup. Its annoying, I wonder what our government is doing to curb this ugly situation.

At Seyi Tinubu’s wedding

His white wedding was supposed to take place in Lake Como (Italy) on Tuesday, August 9 and Wednesday, August 10, 2016.
But on the early morning of Monday, August 8, 2016, a source called ENCOMIUM Weekly to inform us that Seyi Tinubu’s wedding will hold at Oba Akiolu’s palace, Iga Idungaran, Lagos Island, at 11am. We made some few calls and it was confirmed the wedding will actually be taking place.
Though we got there on time, we were unable to witness the solemnization because it was done privately in one of the halls in the palace.
The marriage registry official, we gathered, were called in to perform the solemnization in the presence of the couple’s parents and some prominent Nigerians which include Oba Rilwan Akiolu, the host, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, Chief Bisi Akande, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, Mr. Femi Otedola, Professor Pat Utomi, Mr. Jim Ovia, Ooni of Ife, Oba Ogunwusi and many others.
It was after the wedding that the couple came down to take photographs with some of the dignitaries present that we had the opportunity to talk to them.
The couple didn’t stay long, only for a few minutes and they were on their way out. We gathered that they are still going to Italy for the reception and their honeymoon but without their parents.
It was in the rush to leave to catch their flight to Italy that we were able to get few seconds from the groom, Seyi Tinubu to talk to us.
And here are excerpts…

Nigerian Man kills girlfriend for rejecting his marriage proposal after he pays her school fees

POLICE in Imo State have begun investigating the death of Onyinyechi Okegbulam from Egbu in Owerri North Local Government Area who was killed by her boyfriend for refusing his marriage proposal.
In a gruesome murder, the 22-year-old Onyinyechi was, until her untimely death, a final year student of Federal Polytechnic, Nekede in Owerri West Local Government Area of the state. She was apparently shot in the head at close range by her supposed boyfriend in the village after she rejected his offer of marriage.
Eyewitnesses said that the deceased was lured out of her family home by the boyfriend at night after she rejected him and was then shot. Another source claimed that soon after shooting the girl, the young man tried to smuggle Onyinyechi’s lifeless body into his car but scampered for safety when a woman raised alarm, which attracted several people to the scene.
It is believed that the ditched boyfriend was responsible for the entire educational expenses of the girl and it was this that infuriated him. Police are now said to be looking for the boyfriend, although it has not yet been confirmed if an arrest has been made.
One local resident said: “We heard that the boy picked the bills for the girl’s education but that the girl later abandoned the boy and opted to marry another man. We have even heard that the marriage has been fixed before the boyfriend struck.”
A spokesman from the Imo State Police Command said they are investigating the matter and the late girl’s parents are cooperating with them. If the boyfriend is caught, it is almost certain that he will be charged with murder.
